I picked up my first Brownie at a
yard sale in 1984. I had no idea how
to use it-- I didn't even know what
kind of film it took-- but I liked the
feel and look of it as an object. Since
then I have continued to accumulate
old cameras, particularly twin lens
reflex and box cameras. This project
grew out of that growing collection
and the surprising results that come
from these simple objects. Using them
has prompted me to rethink and
revisit photography's historical
foundations-- and to contemplate the
place for these technologies in the
digital age. It has grown from a
revisitation of historical technologies
into a mediation on memory and the
creation of "history"-- personal, local,
national, and collective.
